Let’s first talk about what happened to date night…

When the kids were very, very little Paul and I used to go out on Date Night once in a while. It basically meant that his parents watched the kids while we went out to dinner. Thanks Maury and Trudy!! Our nights out together unfortunately were kind of obliterated when Lauren was about 2 (can’t remember exactly how old she was). She finally confided that she would get very upset when we weren’t home at bed time. It was actually less reasoned confiding and more sobbing uncontrollably. We tried a few different things, but eventually just gave up on going out in the evening.

At the time it seamed reasonable to suspend date night. How long could it possibly take before she got old enough to be comfortable with it… She turned 3, then 4, then 5 and then she and her brother joined the swim team and every night was taken up with practices and lots of weekends were taken up with meets (If you’ve never been to a swim meet, they are exhausting. Some are only 4 – 5 hours… ha only, but some are 2 sessions a day for 2 or even 3 days in a row and it takes the rest of the week to recover). To make a long story short, we never re-instituted date night and I think that was a mistake.

As a couple it would be really good for us to have time out alone, even if it’s just dinner. Since the kids are teens now, their only concern is who’s making them dinner. It doesn’t have to be every week, but I think putting something on the calendar on a regular basis is the key or else it won’t happen.

Here are some ideas I came up with for things couples could do together for date night… and it doesn’t have to be in the evening. It’s just about getting out together without the kids and it’s fun to try something new once in a while.

The tried and true dinner date. It’s always nice to go out to dinner together because it’s fun, romantic and gives you time to talk to each other without being interrupted by the kids. It’s also easy and sometimes we need easy.

Dinner or other activities with other couple friends. OK, sad reality. I’ve realized that we don’t really have couple friends that we go out with. I have friends and he has friends that we each hang out with separately, but we don’t go out together with other couples… maybe that’s because we don’t really go out, ha. We can remedy that… and you can too.

Join a co-ed book club. Ok, my husband would rather have his teeth extracted, but for those of you who have chatty husbands. One, congratulations and two, you guys may enjoy something like this.

Take a class: art class, wood working, cooking, tennis lessons, triathlon training, golf, spin or cross fit at the gym, etc…

Go on an outdoor adventure: hiking, ski diving, kayaking, biking, skiing. Go to the beach without the kids. Lauren’s head explode if we went to the beach without her, but maybe it’s doable for you.

Go to an event: art exhibit, sporting event, concert. Remember how much fun concerts were?

Check your local papers and blogs for things going on around town.

You could even have a romantic dinner at home if you can get rid of the kids for the night (I mean if you can find sleep overs for your little cherubs)… and “romantic” dinner could be pizza and a movie. Paul and I used to do that almost every weekend before we had the kids.

And here’s another idea: If you’re going out to dinner, meet at the restaurant rather than getting ready together at home, maybe meet up after work. Check out this funny post from “A Cup Of Joe” on why you may want to meet up at the restaurant.

What do you guys do to stay connected as a couple? Tell me your stories and ideas in the comments below. I love hearing about every one else’s experiences and I think it could be helpful to other readers too.

Here are the photos that didn’t turn out so well. Paul was not exactly adept at taking that photo (at the top of the post). He was a trouper though. Thanks honey. Sorry I got mad at you.
